Yes, admittedly it is unfair when terrain and obstacles do not perform correctly, or at least as how you perceive them.

However, assessing what would happen in that situation is subjective and we try as far as possible to not delve into the realms of speculation when trying to make decisions on scoring.

Your view of the shot should tell you that it had disappeared into what was an unplayable position (ball not visible within 'as it lies' drop location) and so the decision is then in the player's hands. Return to position of last shot, accepting the penalty, or look closely at the drop location and decide if you are actually going to get the drop expected.

When you have the 'as it lies' and no ball is still visible, what is actually happening is the drop is drawn on the surface immediately above where the ball has come to rest, in much the same way as if you tread on an opponent's ball marker, the colour appears on the top surface of the shoe.

How about this a took a 11 on the 16th hole, hit it in the fairway rolled all the way past the trees into the water, took a drop, would not allow me to advance the ball, all hopes of a high finishing position went down the tubes on 1 hole, i was burning let me tell u all, slammed the mouse broke it had to go buy another one, "nice".....

Helllo Mike,

For the 3rd round of the Johnny Walker Championship I shot a -10, but the score recorded was -9. I was -10 through 14 and missed a 6 foot birdie putt on 18. Should be -10 for round 3.

EDIT: I see I had a penalty stroke for going in the water.

Scott,

Please contact the tour admin (Dave) for that event. It is a Country Club event and as such the admin is handled by the Country Club owner.

If you went in the water, did not get a drop, and came out of the round by breaking out of the non-showing post-shot, then the penalty stroke is correct... it replaces the shot you didn't have counted, and you hit from your original position because of no drop availability.

The place to do so would be by Private Message, or via the Country Club's dedicated forum area - http://pgls.golfladders.co.uk/forums/viewforum.php?f=82
