Calculation for chipping

I always seem to over shoot the hole by several yards, is there a calculation to get the correct club distance when chipping or pitching? It's got so bad that I use flop all the time!

In game go to woodys practise course and chart the distance where the chip lands and thens the distance it ends up, Your starting point for the chip is just off the green and do this to every dot on the meter and inbetween dots also. Also dont forget to change the stimp of the green when you have finished one particular stimp. Then do it again for every club you use to chip with. Its a mighty pain to do but worth it in the end, Then its just a case of practising out on the course

no real calculations all trial and error, at least that is how i learned to chip
i also only chip with the 64W i have figured out if the chip is uphill i use low spin bout half.
downhill half high spin. the second dot at 10 to 12 stemp i figure between 30 and 35 ft with roll
which all depends on weather it is uphill or downhill and how much.
hope that helps some, i pretty much play by the seat of my pants and dont rely on calculations much
i just hit it how i feel. i do make quite a few chips from all around the greens.

I think the course name is "Woody's Practice Area" ... or just type WOODY at the carousel and it should take you there.

Hi Armand,
The approx formula I use to chip is as follows:
If I have a 42ft chip to pin down 12inches, I place the flag just under half way as that is where the chip will come to ground. At that point, if the downhill shows 9 inches down, then the chip when it lands will only need to roll 3 inches down the rest of the way to the pin, so I would be looking at hitting a half backspin chip approximately 39 feet, or just over 2 dots with a 12 stimp green. The same applies to uphill chips. 12 up from the ball to pin but only - 3 up from the landing area, = 45 foot chip.
Hope that makes sense sir.
Regards,
Sikkum (feel free to check my chip in stats if you have doubts)

Simple graph for chips (normal conditions, flat green, stimp 10, distance in meters, D1,2,3 = meter dots):
