Depends on the phone. With my android phone they provided a cable to do just that.

I think with iPhones they have a similar approach where you put the old and new one near each other and it will transfer the data over.

If you have a different type of phone to your old one you could connect the phone to your PC and take the data off then do the reverse with your new phone.

Mark's advice, depends on your phone, is correct. Remember, YouTube is your friend. They have quite a few videos/instructions on how to transfer data from one phone to another.

Your phone automatically backs-up all your data to your Provider. Once you get a new phone, log into the same account you've been using. Once logged in you'll be prompted to download your data. Pretty easy depending on much data was stored in your backup.

In my case, I have all data backed up to a Google drive i.e. photos, music and videos. There is also an app backup in the drive. Some of the older apps may not reinstall and you'll have to manually download those apps again. But the data will be there waiting for the new app to be launched.

Agreed, that applies to the iPhone where your data is stored on iCloud and/or iTunes. Android phones as far as I know don't have such backups.

With Android it uses your Gmail account. As long as that same account is used on the new phone it will download everything to the new phone. Google Drive gives users 15 GB of storage space which is plenty for me. One caveat. If the phone is set to "do not synchronize with Google Drive" then you would need the usb cable to transfer the files to your computer then back to your new phone.
