Montclair hole #17, pin position 7, 2nd round Pair Ups

This pin setting should be outlawed for any future use. It is positioned on a slick slope that rolls off into a bunker even on the most delicate, slow moving putts from 3 feet away, and even for chip shots uphill to it. And especially with 13 stimp, hard greens.

If you look at the scores for that hole, we had several 7s, 9s, 11s and a 20 something. My team scored a 5-- I hit my approach to 5 feet, luckily, but my partner's very cautious lag putt rolled into the bunker. My sand shot rolled up a foot from the hole, then came right back to the bunker. Only my partners next shot from the sand landing in the hole ( a near miracle shot) kept us from a 7, an 11 or maybe a 22. Point being, the hole is unplayable by any standard with the pin in that unfair spot.

I don't blame the setter for this --as a setter myself I know I do my best to choose reasonable pins, but I don't play every hole with planned pins to be able to notice such a nasty pin placement. Setters are volunteers, they should not be expected to play out every hole they set or we would not have anyone willing to set tourneys each week. I think the solution is one of two things: 1. Get the designer to remove or move that pin placement, or 2., maybe Mark can somehow annotate that pin setting as something other than "Difficult". Perhaps "Danger" or some similar annotation. Or my preferred annotation for that pin, "No Fucking Way". :wtf:

All comments welcome.

Tony

getting ready to play that in Pair9 today. Yes - that pin is sooo unfair that I'll be taking some det cord with me to blow that pin up.
Comments so far have been very polite. Waiting for the nasty ones to start coming in. :cheesy:

Thanks for pointing out the issue with the pin setting. CharlieB and I played that round yesterday and got a par on that hole so I guess we got lucky but I understand the frustration and appreciate the comments about not blaming the setter, even though, I do feel bad and I am sure my name has been used in vain a few times. BTW Tony, brilliant play by you and Tony at PairsUp and Division pairs. 23 points at Clay Estates was amazing.

trying to get the designer to fix would not work The designer was a one-course wonder
and did not put out anything after this one, to be quite honest I have issues with the greens on this course altogether
I believe they should have been smoothed out more, they are way too rough to hold a line well, I also noticed some other seem issues while playing it
I believe it should be noted and left out of tourneys in the future altogether.
just my take on things. not your fault Alan sometimes we just don't have the time to check out every angle on the pins.
but sort of as a rule I use if they are that close to the edge of the green I just don't use them as to not cause issues.
after all, we are here for fun and sometimes some of this stuff can just suck all the fun out of the game.

I recall that Alan and I were short on the approach shot to the pin and were able to 2 putt for the par without rolling off.

Alan, no problem at all. As I said, it's a design mistake as the pin placement breaks every PGA rule for pin sets for obvious reasons. As for the 23 at Clay, credit goes to my partner Stozza who was unconscious (or on drugs, I don't which  ) and holed out a long chip, a pitch and a squirrely sand shot. I was just along for the ride :walkman:

I placed this on the course notes on the setup page
"bad pin on 17 to close to the edge.
also, rough greens that should have been smoothed out
before release. also a few seem issues.
I would not recommend this course for tourney use.

Forum has a pretty robust search feature. My memory sucks for the most part, but when I take a 20 on one hole, it sticks for some reason.
