Hole Viewer utility spreadsheet

Post by JMK59 »

I made this utility for myself, but I'd like to make it available to everyone in the PGLS community - the Hole Viewer.

It started as a virtual Caddy assistant, but it can also provide a quick way to make a scorecard.jpeg.
It reads any course.description file, and creates a graphical output of the pin locations, all combinations of Tee-Pin yardages, and a rough hole layout with elevation changes. And it also makes scorecards (for RandyG).

I've been running it on a second monitor while I watch R1 of the Masters on my main. Have fun with it.

This works with EXCEL 2007 and newer, but not any of the Online Excel's that don't support the Visual Basic Language (VBA).

Mark,

I take it you've downloaded, and tried out the utility? Were the instructions easy enough to follow, and did all the buttons and pull-downs work as expected? Only course I found to not work as expected was 9_at_Mistmore.

Hi,

I had no issues with it using Office 365.

The next version of the Hole Viewer will be out before the PGA Championship.
One of the new features is a Course Route Map (below). I'm working on a way to show the wind direction wrt each hole.

John, this is very well done. As a GIS consultant I am licking my paws after exploring this utility!

Onyx,

Glad you like it. I originally made it to help me select and play exact pins at the Masters. My hope is that more course designers will want to use it, along with actual pin sheets, to plant the pins we see Thursday thru Sunday at other Majors. The hardest part (on my part) is the "scanning in" of all 18 greens of a particular course - takes about 15 min. for each green.

Being spoiled with working with hi-res pointclouds I am very impressed how you managed to derive meaningful information out of the meagre geodata and made it very accessible. Indeed, if course designers would be willing to include some extra green 3d points into the .description file (may be too much clutter for the game setup) that would heighten the resolution. Or - some kind of ETL that simply filters out georefdata from the unity package. Could be that the opendata course designer environment already has this functionality - haven't even thought about that... Anyways, intriguing work!
