Mouse lag

Post by mwalimu »

A question for the 3-clickers here. Is it normal for the response on the swing meter to lag behind the mouse click for perhaps a tenth of a second? This, in effect, requires one to learn and get a feel for how much "lead time" to allow when clicking the mouse both at the top of the swing and at the snap. It's part of where I'm running into trouble and I'd likely be doing better if the clicks registered at pretty much the instant I click the mouse button.

Sometimes it's a soft click from the user, sometimes it's the frame buffer of your graphics card. The later seems to skip frames - the old "chattering" meter. Sometimes its your internet connection speed.

Not just the mouse.

Start with this link so you can see how my system compares to other similar builds. Plus, it will give you a reference to userbenchmarks.com "labels" for performance. i.e. battleship, nuclear submarine, UFO. https://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/37795266

Hi Guys. There are many factors for mouse lag or stutters. You have to first consider your processors power/speed. Going back to the beginning of PG I had an Intel® Core™ i5-4670K Processor and an nVidia GTX 970 video card. I could play this game but I would get stutters and lags a lot. My Internet speed back in 2015-16 was 100 down and 12 up. So the Internet factor when playing solo was probably never the culprit.

Let's jump to October 2016. I decided to build a new computer for both this game and video editing. I will list the components below which are still in my computer to this day.

The point being: Since the new build, no more mouse lag, skips or jitters. :good:

My components:

1: Asus Strix Z370-E MOBO 2: Intel i7-8700K CPU 3: EVGA GTX 1070 Ti Video Card 4: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB DDR4 DRAM 3000MHz RAM
5: Noctua D15 CPU Air Cooler 6: Acer KG271C 144Hz 1920 x 1080 27" monitor 7: Samsung NVME 870 EVO 500 GB SSD

The Case or Tower: I recommend a Mid Size tower that is wide enough to fit a triple fan video card and/or a AIO Liquid Cooler or a High Air Profile Air Cooler like my Noctua D15. There are many CPU coolers of both types, but a powerful gaming rig needs one or the other. Good prebuilds usually come with AIO Liquid Coolers or High Profile Air towers.

Lastly, the Internet Factor: www.speedtest.net If your ping/lag is less than 20ms you're in good shape. Down Speed mbps 30 or more is good. Up Speed of 5 or higher is good.

Hope that helps you diagnose your system's performance. Also, if you download the benchmark test file from www.userbenchmarks.com you can really learn a lot about your system. Bottom line: Your system would want to receive an Aircraft Carrier or higher label for gaming. Anything less will not be a good performer for these types of games.

What do I recommend to anyone who can buy a pre-built or retail computer? I searched Amazon for what I believe are good gaming machines for PG and just about anything else you want to install. NOTE: Internet has to be close to what I noted above. If not, there will always be some glitches, especially with multiplayer rounds.

I am not affiliated with Amazon. The links below are from searching their site for specific components both Intel and AMD. These are good reference builds that have Solid State Drives* and very good graphics cards for 1920x1080 gaming monitors. They will also work on 2K monitors.
*Hard Drives will hold back a good system

Intel CPU
https://www.amazon.com/Dell-Gaming-Desk ... =pc&sr=1-6

AMD CPU
https://www.amazon.com/Skytech-Archange ... =pc&sr=1-2

PS: No one needs to spend the money I did on my system. I did a lot of research before I ordered each part separately and then built the computer. I would consider my system to be a medium-high (level) gaming rig.

Great stuff Lee. I knew you could explain in more detail and better than I could. You've explained it like an engineer, as I am. Now my superiors would tell me to coble it down to two sentences for the Admiral. What's the fix, and how much does it cost?

1. What's the most likely cause of his stutter.
2. Can I throw money at it to fix it? ie a new mouse

1. What's the most likely cause of his stutter? (Low end CPU which means a new motherboard too)
2. Can I throw money at it to fix it? ie a new mouse (a new mouse won't fix anything unless the guts of the computer are very good to excellent.

For those who like to delve into technique also an interesting read on lag and latency is this : https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/gu ... ion-guide/

I am not affiliated with Nvidia, but since lots of rigs have such a card inside it might apply to many PG players

Excellent. In theory, you would rarely if ever experience mouse jitters or lag when playing solo. Multiplayer may have different results due to a player's high Ping/Lag in the group. If you are experiencing mouse jitters etc., then most likely your CPU is the culprit.

I suggest to anyone who is new to analyzing their own system to download the temporary executable file benchmark.exe at www.userbenchmark.com . Copy the URL at the top of the page after running the tests and post it here in the forum. It's really easy to run the test and you can save the file and do it again anytime you like. NOTE: close all programs before running the test. I close everything in my System Tray too, except Windows Defender.

You can create a free account at the site as well. No bombardment of pop-up ads either. Their purpose is to help gamers choose parts for new computers and upgrades. It's just normal business like any commercial site. Even my site has a few software suggestions of programs I use on W10.
