Week 21 Tournament

Post by IanD »

So... thought I'd ask if anyone was reading, how they find the Tourney..?

I have played Ocean View waaaay before the Ani's were introduced and don't recollect any issues. However...

I ceased playing for 6mths and now I've returned, I am having some concerns that I've yet to identify the solutions to. Maybe I'll take them to the PP Forum, but for the moment, wondered if I was alone ?

Stuttering of the meter is my issue. My scores don't fully reflect this, but I'm living through some tough endurance rounds and making my game unpredictable lately lol!

Stuttering, which I atrribute to HD access, is usually due to low resources or continued use of resources. I never suffered with this prior to this version of PP... and add to that, this course has animations, I'm concerned the course is not helping too. Anyone else experience stuttering or slowness on this course? I suspect not... as I know my system only has 8gb RAM. The 2GB NVidia card isn't the major issue... most likely my RAM.

I also have quite a few courses installed, and this was one of the last things I recall seeing, with many experiencing issues by having increased amounts of courses. When I load up PG, it takes quite some time before I get the loaded screen to be able to click past the intro.
Also, once completed playing and exiting the Tournament back to the Home screen... I have tried clicking EXIT too early, with the odd chinese or garbage on the screen (text), and seen PG hang and even Crash. It sometimes won't exit when this happens too.

So, anyone else experience anything like this?

As for the Tournament... loved RD 1... hated RD 2 lol!
I love the way the course tests you on the front 9, whilst offering a little more reward on the back 9. However, the one tee, that tries to replicate Firestone, in how the wind requires you to shape the shot rather than aim against the wind, is tough. I suffered hard with my stutter on the back 9 today for RD 2.... and even had a 7 when really, a par was fair. Not to worry, as I feel my game isn't off too much and my reactions have greatly improved with the increased playing.

Good luck to those beginning the fun..

Ian,

Can I ask if you have antivirus running, and if so, what package?

I have heard of some problems with stuttering from players using Avant, and in many cases people are not using the gaming setting that their antivirus has.

It may seem odd that the antivirus would be particularly active, but much of the API traffic uses the same protocol as browser traffic, both sending and receiving to PP, and the routines used happen on every shot played.

It may also be worthwhile looking at the game console to see how much you have in the way of red error messages. I have noticed that when these are prevalent, the video and IP communication seems to take a rather large hit.

I have a full library of all courses but don't suffer much in the way of loading issues. My installation of Steam and PP are on my HDD rather than my SSD, which I tend to keep purely for my Windows installation, system level applications and page-swap file space. I'm sure it goes without saying that any SSD is going to quickly fill up and lose any advantage if space is taken up to the point of it being inefficient in the sort of fast call/retrieve traffic which it is so effective at utilizing.

I get many artifacts and hangs on exiting or when moving between in-game and menu screens. That is purely down to the Graphical User Interface being poorly conceived and not making the necessary calls for a full screen refresh at certain points of execution. The exit issue is one that has crept in over the past two builds and hopefully will be resolved with a future update to fix some identified bugs.

Thanks Mike for the reply.

In regards to AV, I use the basic AVG... never had any issues regarding the Anti-Virus intervening though, so I'm 99.9% sure this isn't the area causing my stutter. Note, we can never be 100% sure lol..

My system has no SSD, so I'm sitting on a 2TB HD with approx 800GB free.

As for the Console and errors... you may have stumbled upon something... as I have many... if you have any thoughts on these, I'd be very interested and grateful to know how to improve them...?

This is what I encountered when loading Stableford 9 and standing on the 1st Tee ;

Ocean View imo is a well designed course With plenty to test the player. I have not suffered from any Stuttering and I too only have 8g of ram. I am concerned regarding the animated Stag because its a large object but cant say it has affected my games performance. I too have a full compliment of course. The affects you describe at the end of the game I share too, game with stall sometimes sending me off to an advertisement regarding a cometition and there are time when even Task manager wont move it. In this situation I have found the best method is to click on start, Right click PG icon in Task bar which in term will state windows has stopped and gives you the option to close game
