Game settings used by PGLS

Post by mwalimu »

This discussion and a couple of similar ones in the past have me wondering about game settings used in PGLS tournies and events. In particular, what game settings are never used for PGLS events, and which ones are avoided in events that count towards stats/handicaps but may be used in certain other events?

My observations:
Tees - In stats/handicap events, always Tournament or Championship, correct? Any may be used in other events.
Green Quality - always Perfect. Are Realistic or Bumpy ever used?
Fairway/Green Firmness - all values used
Stimp - All values used? Or are the highest/lowest limited to non-stats/handicap events?
Wind - Higher wind speeds never used. Where's the cutoff?
Time/Cloud/Weather - ?

What about courses? Which ones are never used, or are only used in non-stats/handicap events? Is there a list of never-used pin positions in otherwise usable courses?

If a course has Championship tees we tend to use them. If a course doesn't have Championship tees, we then try to avoid using the "Ladies" tees (excluding the Trifecta Tour).
Green Quality - always Perfect. Are Realistic or Bumpy ever used?
Yes we always use "Perfect". To make sure we get the same game experience for all players we don't use Realistic or Bumpy as they would be randomly set for each player.
Stimp - All values used? Or are the highest/lowest limited to non-stats/handicap events?
Very rarely use Stimp 8 but again settings used in Tough Stuff may use it.
Wind - Higher wind speeds never used. Where's the cutoff?
We avoid going over 15mph/24kph (API setting 6) as the wind model is broken beyond this, as discussed elsewhere. Again Tough Stuff is excluded with this.
Time/Cloud/Weather - ?
Time wise we tend to start at 10am for rounds and no later than 4pm. With Dynamic Skies on, times outside of this would reduce the light on the course making it look too gloomy.

How are pins selected for a "standard" round?I would think looking at each pin placement and making a decision would be time consuming especially multiplied across all the tournaments and holes.

That is pretty much how it is done, for the tourneys I set I figure out my settings
then I go to the course and put it into practice mode I then go to each green and show all pins
I look at my settings for each hole each round and pick my pins for the best to go with the settings.
not really very time-consuming I would say I spend no more than about 45 minutes to figure out a tourney
that goes from thinking the settings out and researching the pins. now I can only speak for myself as I really don't know how the other setters are figuring it out and I only do 2 tourneys a week and they are both only 36 hole tourneys so I would say an hour and a half a week is about all I spend.
