Realistic Greens

Post by Affo »

Well, just got to say that me and realistic greens just don't get on (haven't played a bumpy round yet).

Played a few rounds in Tournaments here and OGT and each time, i'm left thinking "nope, can't stand them". I find myself almost allowing for the imperfectness of the green, then it stays on course, so next time I make myself aim as I would for perfect greens...nope, that meanders off quite severely sometimes  . Ok, the odd one does find it's way into the cup when it looks like it may slide on by, but they are in the minority, believe a Statto!

Not making any attempts to have them barred or anything like that, same for all players I know, but a man's gotta rant a little sometimes...gggrrrrrrr

I'll pack my bags until the next week on the JNPG wheel of fortune.
The scores may be unrealistic, or even a joke but heyho, that's what we got.

Play well and enjoy your game everyone! :drinks:

btw, not a game for snowflakes.

Humbling after two years but that controller you're using will keep your long game intact.

Hehe, true, but I was that bad last night, my FIR and GIR must have been low too.

Hi Andy,

You can rest assured that you are unlikely to see bumpy greens in the events. I believe most of the courses we play would be of a better quality than your local municipal, so we will avoid those. There are a few tracks that do a good enough job of that anyway... anyone remember our last tour visit to Mill Green GC?

We will continue to use the 'realistic' because I do believe that the quality of greens would move in that direction over the course of 50+ players spending four days on them. Also not ashamed to admit that the introduction of this slight 'wrinkle' may serve to knock those who absolutely have the greens down to a fine art by just a couple of strokes, and let someone less adept who plays the percentages a chance to get closer.

No worries Mike, like I said...just a bit of rage venting, lol.

They are what they are, you guys set the events and we play them, can't have perfect conditions all of the time, I just don't like them that's all.

So, I see all of the current tournies have perfect greens. Did someone's arm get twisted? :)

No arm twisting gone on...seems like PGLS wanted more realistic golf.

I was just curious. I prefer the realistic setting. With OGT going away and PGLS only using the Perfect setting, that leaves guys like me without a place to play a tournament. Maybe its time to fire up Visual Studio and try to generate some virtual tournaments.

The realistic setting imho is a great idea, just when putts break against the slope..they stop being realistic.

I generally play, if ever, on mediocre club greens in real life which certainly aren't perfect in the roll department most of the time, but if there are imperfections, your putt doesn't end up 2 foot wide of it's mark because of it.

I hope it gets tweaked in some future update as perfect is too.....perfect for want of a better word, lol, until then I have to say i'm happy it's perfect only, but if realistic greens are thrown in every so often, I won't cry about it, same for all.

As posted elsewhere on the subject:

Yes, having reviewed play for a few weeks with the 'Realistic' green settings, I found that they were somewhat overdone. I can accept a ball moving perhaps half a ball's width from its desired line, but at times I saw results equating to somewhere between 6 and 12 inches. I feel the level of competition we want to promote means that the tracks we decide to play on should produce the fairest test of skill, and so, until there is a re-appraisal of just how realistic that setting actually is, I think we will stick with perfect greens in our main events.

This will not be a general rule across all events, as we have a future competition which falls into a category where other choices may be desirable. At some point in the near future, we will be launching Biffa's Tuff Stuff, where Les will be given freedom to be severe and downright devious with settings, locations, conditions and other factors. Call it 'survival of the most resilient'!

Mike

Before that decision Art, we were using Perfect for two rounds, and moving to Realistic for the final two, to represent the expected deterioration in surface. I would love to use them again, as I'm all for realism. I just feel I was seeing a little too much and a little too often. Hopefully future updates will get it under control, as I'm sure when I first looked at them I felt the variance and frequency was just right.
