Palm Beach Par 3 GC

Post by Mwh65 »

Palm Beach Par 3 GC by RobV has been added to the PGLS Courses database ...

pgcourses.php?id=584

Rob has also added the following notes ...
Designed by world-renowned golf course architect Dick Wilson and his apprentice Joe Lee, the Palm Beach Par 3 Golf Course was built by Michael Phipps and opened for play in 1961. It was privately owned until 1973, when the Town of Palm Beach purchased it for $5 million. The course was recently renovated and redesigned in 2009 by Hall of Fame golfer Raymond Floyd.

This was a fun little project to build. It is mostly a short course with challenging greens, but a lot of fun to play. I used the Course Terrain Tool to download the lidar data and used whatever assets I had for the palm trees, houses, planting, etc. and it plays great too!

I am listing this as a "final" version, but certainly if you find anything wrong with the course or want to post some comments, feedback, etc. feel free to do so. I hope you enjoy it.

Robv has added these notes about the update ...
Using the dynamic clouds on this course is causing 'stutter' and skips within the game play. I can't figure it out why as I have not encountered this with my other courses. So, I decided to remove the clouds and just use a static skybox for a smoother game play experience. The course plays 10Xs better now.

someone pointed out there was no 'drop zone' when hitting the ball into the water. And they were right.. not sure how I missed that, but I have updated the course with a water hazard drop.

@RobV - do you mean to tell me the designer has the option to place lateral water hazards drops? If so, why do we get lateral hazard drops as much as 150 yards (or more) from the spot where the ball entered the water? We should get 2 club lengths, no closer to the pin.

Hi whattashot - For the most part, I think so... Just for transparency, by going by Mike Jones' tutorials on how to create a hazard and drop in Course Forge, the hazard system has always been questioned. I do think that the hazard system was never perfected and reading through the old PG forums, many designers have provided comments on fixes and how it should work, but they went unaddressed.

What I do is create a hazard, test it by hitting the ball into the water a few times and note that the drop of the ball is reasonable. This may take multiple tries over and over, but again it is only what we are given with and what Course Forge can deliver.

Extremely kind of you to respond. I appreciate it. Mike Jones, hmm, there's a name from the past. He will live in infamy as the lying scoundrel he is, and that was common knowledge back when he was ruining courses for Links, and Microsoft. Somewhere in the Steam files on this game is a video tutorial on using the BLI. Watch it and you will see how little he knew about this game that he half-assed produced. I'm almost 80 years old, but if I was younger, I would try to get a group together to get the code for this game from Trackman. Perhaps, someone will do it some day and do the updates needed for this game. The first thing on the list. Female avatars, then wind that actually affects the ball even when you hit a snap. And of course, legal drop from hazards, and a drop from an un-playable lie. How did they create a golfing game and leave those things out? Rhetorical question. Thanks again for your response.
