Mark, "varied" wouldn't be strictly accurate would it, considering the possibility of having the same pins in more than one round - as has happened this week?! I'll be interested to see what pin locations I get in Rounds 2 and 4 hehe.
I obviously set-up TRTCC events, I just go into practice on a solo round, select all pins and then choose pin positions for each round, making sure none are duplicated. It doesn't take that long and all my members seem to be more than happy with the set-ups. And what made the weekly set-ups easier was some 'superstar' who made a directory of all the courses!
I have been a pin setter for some time now. I was taught how it Should be done by Mike (Mimic). How I do it should be I believe the correct way. First I set up a solo game using Practice mode. I would zoom in on all greens using F2 then select all pin positions on the green. I will then select 4 different pins for each of the four rounds (ensuring that no pin is used more than once,) that is if its a 18 hole tour, If 9 holes I just need to select just two pins per hole. I always select different holes for every round and never use the same pin twice. For round 1 I like to select pins that are central thus making it easier for players to have a more gentle round to start off (making pins from the off will often lead to unhappy players not continuing with the set tour. I may slip i n the odd more difficult pin for variety. So with each round I try to make them more harder, but remembering to try not to choose pins that would be impossible to putt on (severe slopes). This is not always possible, its mainly down to the course designer who can add anything from 2 to 8 pins to choose from per hole.
The art of making a good challenging course I believe is done by pin choice. I look for pins near Water or bunkers or near run off points on the green. Choosing 0 every time would make every round the same, it takes a little more time to choose individual pins for each round but it is well worth it. Pins need to also match the conditios of the round, Pins on the front of greens with soft greens would give you Spin on all rounds like wise where hard greens are used its important to allow some run on the green before the hole.
The reason to change pin settings to random was to allow the setter to add a variety of pins, otherwise setting round 1 as either Easy Medium or hard its not giving the right picture because not all pins would be considered as easy medium or hard by individual players. So calling them Randam holes allows more variety like slipping in a less difficult pin for a par 3 where the round on the whole is classed as difficult.
I can only speak for myself on the way I set, other setters may do different approach but I do hope this will become the general practice.
Well, just finished playing Round 2 and lo and behold - I had the same pins as Rounds 1 and 3!!!!! Was this just unlucky?! Can't wait to play the same pins yet again in Round 4 ffs...
you can pick different pin positions its just that setters no longer determine if pin locations is easy, medium or difficult
give the guy a break he just started and is doing his best.
happy new year
Dunc, I have no idea who set the pins and was not having a go at anyone - just the pin selection process perhaps, because it does not seem to be working properly?! Wouldn't you agree if the same pins come up in the first three rounds of an event?!
