PGA18 - The 145th Open Championship - Day-by-day

Post by MiMiC »

Hi to all,

THE 145th OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP - DAY-BY-DAY WITH REAL_LOCATION WEATHER CONDITIONS AND PIN PLACEMENTS

We are happy to announce that we will be providing our own 'simulation' of the 145th Open Championship this week, using the excellent user-created design of Southport Links by DoGgs (Kenny) to play the same conditions and set-up as far as possible that the real-life competitors are contending with this week.

Each day for this week's PGA18, we will gain access to the pin placements as produced by the Open Championship itself, and map those locations using as close a pin placement as we can. Some will be approximate, as you can never tell where they may have decided to place pins this week, but we are confident that Kenny's course will help us to keep a good representation of the challenge each day. Weather for each round is taken from local forecasts each day.

Because of its 'Day-by'Day' staging, we will remove any rounds played on a set up which is not the correct one for the day and announce when the next day is open for official play. Rounds which are in the set-up to begin with beyond Day One are simply duplicates of the first round. Any play in rounds not officially announced as open will be cleared before announcement is made.

You will be able to complete all rounds any time up until the normal shutdown times we usually operate. Daily announcements will be made by Private Message once the day's conditions and placements are in place and the round is officially open.

Absolutely a beautiful opportunity to play along with the actual tournament on PGLS!

Probably a well-known issue (with certain courses), but the response I get playing this course is slow to say the least. I read somewhere that it has to do with the amount of vertices the engine has to process every time you change something in your hole approach (changing shot angle, displaying grid, et cetera), and that may be as well. But is there a workaround to enhance the responsiveness? Changing resolution / vsync / draw distances etc do not work significantly. Or do I just have to adjust to the lag experienced?

I also found this course response time slow but I put that down to my machine. One thing i did find very annoying was in the 2 rounds ive played on two occasions i clicked on the map and it started the meter running which cost me 4 shots over the 2 rounds.

I would recommend players with less than stellar machine performance (such as mine, which isn't usually a slouch) drop the grass objects to zero.

The seas of grass out there put a rather heavy 'tri' count on the course and mean for me at least that there is a lag on any aiming and movement. The course actually doesn't look half-bad with the grasses removed, and helps to play out with confidence when in the waist high stuff!

Yes, that works out nicely. Didn't experiment thorough enough. Thanks for the tip!
